Self-Care … A Journey, Not a Destination

By Denise Humphrey, Ph.D., www.denisehumphrey.com

We routinely cut and color our hair, visit the medical doctor for annual exams, workout at the gym and watch what we eat knowing that these are measures of self-care, not efforts at arriving at a perfect “me” that no longer requires attention and care. We know caring for our bodies is a journey, an attempt to slow the aging process and look our best. Therapy is no different, the results are only less visual. I say “less” visual because the reality is that when we feel well, we look well too.

Oftentimes individuals enter therapy with the desire to “fix” a particular issue thinking that once this issue is “wrapped up” then he or she will be done. What transpires is the evolution of the psyche. As one issue is presented and explored, different issues begin to surface. Deeper understandings of ourselves and how and why we do what we do are brought to light. The more we learn about ourselves, the more we realize we have to learn. And the more we learn, the richer our lives become. As we become more intimately knowledgeable about ourselves we make choices that ensure more meaningful experiences in our lives and in our relationships.

Self-care is a journey. Make 2010 the year you care for yourself inside and out.
