Understanding Mixed Orientation Marriages
By Dr. Denise Humphrey, www.DeniseHumphrey.com
A mixed orientation marriage refers to a marriage in which one person is gay, lesbian, or bisexual, and the other person is straight. Due to cultural, religious and familial expectations about sexuality and gender roles, it is common for homosexual individuals to deny authentic sexual and lifestyle expressions and choose heterosexual relationships in lieu of his or her authentic orientation.
However, the authentic self can only be suppressed for so long until eventually the person’s true identity begins to surface, often in unexpected modes of expression. This usually causes extreme confusion for both individuals in the marriage. Feelings of betrayal and hurt paired with fears regarding children, family and alternative lifestyles are immediately thrown into question. While the previously “closeted” spouse is freed from the burden of secrecy, the straight spouse often goes into the closet to confront new and unfamiliar issues on his or her own.
While some mixed orientation marriages remain intact and may even develop a stronger bond with a deeper level of connection, others may choose to part ways. Therapy can be the most important factor in navigating this challenging and individually unprecedented relationship challenges.
